The streets of Mill Basin were laid out in the early 20th century by J. Clarence Davies, who had them patterned after American cities such as Chicago and Detroit that he admired while traveling in Europe scouting for business opportunities. In the early 1900s, a man named P.H. Mathews proposed development in “the lowlands of New Lots.” Mathews had previously been responsible for the success of the Edgewood Park subdivision and thought that this area was well suited to growth as it was convenient to shopping, transportation, and schools. From 1912 through 1923, he worked to develop the land with financial support from investors, who included prominent businessmen such as Alexander Smith Cochran.
After some legal trouble, Mathews fled New York for Kentucky. By 1926, there was little demand for housing in rural Mill Basin because of rapidly expanding neighborhoods like Flatbush and Midwood. Edward Leavy of Eddy’s Brick and Tile Manufacturers picked up where Mathews left off, buying large tracts of land in the area during WWII. Despite Leavy’s leadership, development was slow until the Housing Act of 1949 spurred construction throughout New York City.
Mill Basin experienced a real estate boom during the 1950s and 60s, which led to its current status as one of New York’s most sought-after areas.As of the 2010 United States Census, Mill Basin has a population of around 33,959 people spread across 7.729 square miles with a median household income of $68,920.
